Crude oil has several impurities and components that can lead to corrosive gases during the refining and distillation process. The list of impurities includes active sulfur compounds, chlorides from brackish water, organic chlorides, organic acids, and carbon dioxide. Refineries are constantly challenged with problems of equipment corrosion. This leads to significant financial losses due to the repair and replacement of equipment but also the facility downtime caused by equipment failures. Most physical equipment can be protected with proper coatings. Electronic equipment requires gas phase or molecular filtration on air entering the computer rooms and MCCs.
